“The gut is not like Las Vegas; what happens in the gut, does not stay in the gut.”

Alessio Fasano, MD

Digestive problems wreak havoc over your entire body leading to allergies, arthritis, autoimmune disease, rashes, acne, chronic fatigue, mood disorders, autism, dementia, cancer and more.

It is central to your entire health. It is connected to everything that happens in your body.

Your entire immune system (and your body) is protected from the toxic environment in your gut by a layer only one cell thick. This thin layer covers a surface area approximately 3000 square feet. This single cell layer basically contains a sewer from entering the rest of the body. If that barrier is damaged, toxins, chemicals, bacteria and proteins have a direct route into your body, leading to a myriad of health issues. We typically start the healing process for many conditions by addressing the gut. Many times, if we heal the gut, other symptoms disappear.

Areas of focus:

Optimizing Digestion, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Abdominal Pain, Bloating, Acne, Acid Reflux, Crohn's disease, Eczema.

Ninety percent of heart disease is preventable, yet heart disease is still the number one killer in this country.
If your body were a computer, food would be the information or input to which your genetic code reacts. That in which you bathe your genes will determine how they are expressed.

Specific phytonutrients can actually help regulate blood sugar, lower LDL levels and even lower blood pressure. At Functional Medicine Specialists we can teach you how food can be your medicine, instead of depending on pharmaceutical pills that can have many unwanted side effects and do not address the root cause of the problem. If your parents had heart disease or diabetes, it does not mean you have to.

We utilize scientifically researched nutrition plans that are customized to your specific genetic and chemical needs. We also have motivating and caring wellness coaches to help you facilitate lasting diet and lifestyle changes.

Diabetes, Obesity, Heart Disease, Hypertension

Multidisciplinary Approach

Cambria uses both a Functional and a Conventional Medicine approach. She incorporates the best parts of traditional medicine and services, but dives deeper into the biochemistry so that she can truly understand the underlying mechanism of the issues at hand. Cambria also incorporates the best studied and most successful integrative strategies to give your child the best available of all disciplines. Cambria takes a detailed history, and looks at all the key systems, discerning what the body needs more of, and what the body needs to get rid of.

Did you know that you have a Pediatric Special Needs expert in your back yard? At Functional Psychiatry and Medicine, we now have the resources of an IFM trained and Medical Academy of Pediatric Special Needs (MAPS) trained practitioner to help all children reach their best potential. Cambria DeMarco, MSN, ACNP-BC has over 20 years of experience recovering kids from Autism (including her own) and helping all children thrive.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are characterized by social-interaction difficulties, communication challenges and a tendency to engage in repetitive behaviors. However, symptoms and their severity vary widely across these three core areas. Autism is caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Autism affects information processing in the brain by altering how nerve cells and their synapses connect and organize; how this occurs is not well understood but we are learning more about this everyday.

In 2014 one in 68 children had Autism and one in 42 males were effected. Today the numbers are even higher. This is primarily a function of our individual genetic vulnerability coupled with an increase in toxic burden, mitochondrial disfunction, gut dysbiosis and oxidative stress. It has been shown that 50% of Autistic children have mitochondrial dysfunction and 80 % of children have sleep disorders. Additionally, 70% of Autistic kids have a nutritional deficiency or have an increased nutrient requirement due to their toxic burden, oxidative stress or mitochondrial dysfunction. Cambria looks at these key areas of mitochondrial function, oxidative stress, toxins, stress, sleep and neuro/gut inflammation. Then she corrects any imbalance, allowing the body to reach homeostasis and to heal.

Other potential areas of testing are food allergies, as almost all children with autism have increased intestinal permeability. In children with allergies, there is an increase in histamine production. Histamine is an excitatory neurotransmitter and it causes neuroinflammation. Cambria also looks at the microbiome and gut health. It is known that some bacteria, like Clostridia for instance, inhibit the conversion of dopamine to norepinephrine. And Candida, another prevalent organism, not only increases Arabinose (which makes disrupts the integrity of the tight junctions of the intestine) but it also can drive sugar cravings and produces both alcohol, acetaldehyde and canditoxin. These byproducts can cause anxiety and inability to concentrate. These metabolites can also bind to, and deplete important vitamins and nutrients that are important for health and are needed to make serotonin.

Additionally, approximately 70% of Autistic kids have folate receptor antibodies, and this results in Cerebral Folate Deficiency. Symptoms of CFD include irritability, sleep disturbance, and developmental regression or psychomotor retardation. The mechanism often includes a cross reactivity to cow’s milk. Cow’s milk contains soluble Folate Receptor Antigen which is 91% similar to human Folate Receptor Antigen. In some kids, they produce antibodies to this Folate receptor antigen and this inactivates the folate receptor, leading to Cerebral Folate Deficiency. In children that have this antibody present, we remove milk, and supplement with folinic acid or leucovorin. If this is the major issue, children can respond as early as one-to-two weeks.

Cambria follows the guidance of IFM expert Dr. Michael Stone, and she looks for the right mechanism, and she applies right intervention at the right time and in the right situation to allow for optimal function.

If there is a history of Autism in the family, we also recommend genetic testing for particular SNPs regarding mitochondrial and detox pathways and I do organic acid testing right away to see if there is any biochemical evidence of mitochondrial disfunction.

Aches and pains, chronic illness and psychosomatic reactions may be telling us that something important is going on emotionally. Often chronic illness gets worse when we are stressed or vague illness seem to come out of nowhere when we are suffering from a loss or other trauma. These psychosomatic experiences are frustrating because we experience them as cut off from our larger emotional and psychic lives making it impossible to improve or eliminate conditions like; rashes and wounds that don’t heal, the neurological conditions, fibromyalgia, feeling faint or about to pass-out out, shaking and seizures, headaches and migraines or chronic pain. Therapists at CWC are able to help make the links between our physical and emotional symptoms improving the way we care for and understand ourselves.

For most caregivers, being there when a loved one needs you is a core value and something you wish to provide. But a shift in roles and emotions is almost certain. Stress is your body’s way of responding to any kind of demand or threat. Long term stress can have lasting damage to the body and brain. The stress response is the body’s way of protecting you from harm. CWC can assist in reprogram your stress response with proven and effective strategies that will bring calm and rest back into your life.

Although grieving can occur for other types of loss as well (such as loss of goals, ideals, and relationships), grief counseling is generally directed toward positive adjustment following loss after the death of a loved one.

Grief counseling helps the individual recognize normal aspects of the grieving or mourning process, cope with the pain associated with the loss, feel supported through the anxiety surrounding life changes that may follow the loss, and develop strategies for seeking support and self-care.
